Though not officially founded until the 1930's, the roots of Hammondville trace back to the 1830's. Hammondville was named after the Hammond family, which had been prominent in the town for years, including William Cook Hammond, who settled there in 1832.

The town was incorporated in 1932 under the first mayor, Bleve Hammond, for whom the former Alabama National Guard Armory in the town, Fort W. B. Hammond, is named. Bleve Hammond served as the town's mayor for 27 years.

Much of Hammondville's initial growth came from the 1926 construction of Highway 11, which created a crossroads with the Valley Head-Henager road.
